Food Waste Days

All of our students currently attend the school canteen, so, it was a natural curiosity of our sustainability board to find out the amount of food wasted during an average meal at Letovo School. With the help of volunteers, our boarding staff helped students put their leftovers into a specially designed container that was weighted at the end of the meal. During dinner on October Food Waste Day, the amount thrown away reached 21 kilograms. At a similar event in November, the cumulative mass rose to as high as 25 kilograms, which was significantly more than most of students had anticipated in a survey issued a couple of days before. Now that the problem is clearly identified, it is up to Sustainability Committee to suggest potential changes to the way canteen operates and the alternative destination of leftovers. The students also noticed the importance of only asking for as much food as they can consume, meaning that the actions of our boarding staff and volunteers has had direct impact on their consumption.
