IB History visits the Gulag Museum

23 November 2019
On the 22nd of November the IBDP History HL and SL classes went on a field trip to the Gulag Museum in Moscow to learn about the methods used by historians, and skills of analysis and interpretation of historical documents. During the trip we practiced analyzing letters, diaries, photographs, and physical objects. They examined how the historical context of physical objects such as water bottles can tell us about the daily life of individuals from the past. These skills will be vital in understanding how to generate outstanding coursework for history class when conducting their historical investigation.
Students learned not only through letters and diaries but also through the museum exhibitions about the life of several Soviet citizens who ended up in the gulags, as well as the gulags themselves, their creation, structure and operation. The museum remains very objective and handles those complicated times with respect and giving and meeting dignity for those impacted.
The Gulag Museum will be visiting Letovo on the 28th November to teach students skills for interviewing elders about their experiences in the past.
