Skill Building Week

At the end of the last academic year, Letovo School passed the IB authorization process and received the right to teach the IB Diploma Programme. This programme for the students of Grades 10 and 11 is recognized by all major universities throughout the world and is famous for its breadth and rigor. It encompasses 6 subjects and 3 core elements: the extended essay (EE), theory of knowledge (TOK) and creativity, activity, service (CAS). Students choose a total of six subjects: 3 to study at standard level (SL) and 3 to study in more depth at higher level (HL).
Those Letovo students who opted for the IB DP and successfully passed the exams have interesting and challenging two years ahead. The programme began this September with a skill building week during which the students of Grade 10 met new teachers, attended numerous lectures and workshops, discussed study plans and the skills necessary to follow these plans and spent some time together socializing.
Ksenia Dolgopolova, a current Grade 10 students, reflected on the skill building week: “On the very first day of the skill building week we talked about internationalism, attended a lecture on TOK , learnt new ways of taking notes, understood more about academic honesty and spent time together meeting new teachers all the while communicating in English.
The IB DP students were divided into 4 groups with names corresponding to four of the world’s leading universities: MIT, Stanford, Harvard and Oxford. The smaller groups made it easier for us to communicate and allowed for the flow of new information. Each group also presented one of the key attributes of an IB learner: resilience, engagement, thinking and collaboration. Much attention was paid to the IB Learner Profile; we talked about different attributes and how they might be useful. Each student picked an attribute or a word and discussed its personal importance to being successful in the IB programme and life in general.
Every day of the week was filled with lectures, classes and workshops on such topics as Model United Nations (MUN), speedreading and memorizing, use of resources for research, SAT, time management, the Unified State Exam in Russian and admission to universities. We were also told about how to communicate with teachers, started our CAS projects and attended an introductory lecture on the extended essay. And this is just a glimpse of how our week went!
The adaptation week was very busy. The most important thing it gave us, besides new skills and introductory classes, was the opportunity to get used to communicating in English and to immerse ourselves in the atmosphere of the International Baccalaureate programme. It was a smooth start to a brand-new academic year with a greater understanding things to come.
