At the core of Letovo educational model are children and their preferences. Each student chooses an individual educational trajectory to study disciplines at different paces, in different logical order, at various levels (from standard to advanced), independently or in class. To keep individual study plan consistent, our teachers guide student’s choice, drawing children's attention to the bigger picture of their opportunities.
Letovo educational model
Letovo School has everything to nurture creative development of the students: a theatrical club, a sound recording studio, well-equipped rehearsal facilities, a choir and a design lab. One can compose music, create pictures and sculptures, or take up ceramics. One can choose extra courses in design and computer-modeling, robotics and developing mobile apps. Every year we organize festivals and contests to celebrate our students’ creative and technical achievements.
Every student is actively involved in sports. This is a great way for young people to learn to manage their emotions and strengths and stay healthy. They will find everything they need on campus to find an activity they love: a stadium, tennis courts, playing fields, running tracks, a dance studio, a martial arts gym, a swimming pool and a training gym. In winter, students can skate, ski or play ice hockey. Students are encouraged to play competitive sports in teams against other schools in Moscow; we organise events with the aim of shaping solid values, skills and culture of health.
We inspire our students to take small steps on their journey towards success and not be afraid of making mistakes. Training sessions, challenges and special personal development courses are held at Letovo School. During extra classes our students learn to realize their goals and aspirations, make decisions, manage teams, quality and knowledge, strategize and overcome difficulties. They can take on a leadership role and understand the significance of collaboration and constant self-improvement. Our alumni prepare to take on the leadership roles of the future and navigate their way through the unknown.
Every learner chooses a set of extra activities at the beginning of the school year. All students are required to participate in the development programme, since it is an integral part of learning at Letovo. The examples are concerts, rehearsals, discussion clubs and lectures which both boarders and day students to take part in. Some of the classes are led by our own specialist teachers, but we also have guest speakers, lecturers and experts who lead master classes and teach specialist disciplines, such as learning musical instruments or offer courses in entrepreneurship.
The experience of taking part in projects and events within the programme helps our learners to become responsible citizens and encourages their active involvement in both the academic and social life of the school. Students learn to value diversity, human rights, understand their own rights and responsibilities, develop socially-significant projects and demonstrate civic responsibility by taking part in volunteer projects and programmes. They become aware of social, economic, ecological and political issues. They learn how wider society works from guest speakers including academics, government ministers, civil servants, leaders of volunteer movements and entrepreneurs.
An important part of the programme is working with original sources, publications in media, popular science literature, statistical data and personal observations. This helps students become insightful members of society, orientate themselves in current events and processes, assess people’s actions and become aware of their own rights. The subject programme incorporates an integrative approach and is taught at several academic levels. The content covers the basics of subjects such as History, Geography, Sociology, Economics, Politics, Philosophy, Psychology, Law and Business Management.
Science helps students learn to plan and carry out research, assess evidence, draw conclusions, manage team work and reflect on their own learning. In this subject area, it is particularly important that the content studied is current, which is why the way science develops over time is discussed. Through research and experimental work, our students learn Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Engineering Sciences. Our learners make their first discoveries and present their results at school conferences in Russia and abroad. The teaching methodology utilizes modern technology and an interdisciplinary approach, including elements of the US Next Generation Science Standards. Students choose from three levels and take two compulsory courses each year.
Analyzing the culture, history and literature of the countries of the languages under study occupies a significant place within the programme. Learners can continue their education in foreign languages, while following their cultural interests and discovering new perspective. English is offered at several levels; it is compulsory and the medium of instruction in different subjects in high school. Each student chooses a second foreign language (German, French, Spanish or Chinese) to master at standard or advanced level.
We inspire students and teach them to strive for improvement and overcome barriers. We want our students to love the feeling of confidence that comes through achieving their physical goals, to aspire to be in shape and to consciously cherish their own health and fitness. The physical education course offers knowledge and skills which will form the basis of a balanced and healthy lifestyle. In P.E. lessons our learners do not just play different sports and perform different exercises, they get to experience and understand what is meant by a healthy lifestyle.
While studying language and literature, students begin to understand their own oral and written traditions, learn to lead discussions, structure and write various texts and, reflect and engage in creative activities. We teach our students to analyze works from diverse cultures and eras, works of fiction and non-fiction, use linguistic and literary concepts and skills in various contexts, study characters and heroes’ behavioral models.
Through mathematics we teach students to look for the connections between formulas, and life, and other sciences, and to create models to describe and understand real-life situations. Teaching mathematics is based on the balance between three components: logical rigor, intuition and mental experimenting. The learning process is built around individual or group problem solving tasks. Depending on their level and interests, our students can study the subject at three levels: standard, advanced and profound. They also choose two courses from the compulsory programme of extracurricular courses every year.
Learning through arts helps students develop their creative thinking skills, discover and express themselves, understand the diversity and uniqueness of different people. We teach our students to create and present works of art, search for inspiration, make conscious connections between epochs and cultures, reflect on the arts and deepen their perception of the world. Through studying cultural contexts and personal creativity, our students broaden their tastes and artistic empathy. Besides the general course of arts and culture, our students can choose additional strands. The programme includes musical and visual arts, working with textile fabrics, glass and ceramics, sculpture, design, theatre and cinema.
Information Technology is not considered to be an autonomous discipline, but as an instrument to solve problems from different subject areas: mathematics, biology, linguistics and other sciences. The practical work relies on specialized facilities of the school: the video studio, the theatre, a server room and IT-developments class, the school newspaper editorial office and research labs. We cooperate with the largest IT companies in Russia and internationally: their experts help us write programmes and they act as consultants for students for projects on themes such as 3D-modeling, robotics, web-programming, developing mobile apps and working with virtual reality technology.
Every day the students learn to cooperate with one another by carrying out group projects and collectively solving research problems. Clubs are organized according to students’ interests at Letovo School they can exercise their team-working skills and try on different roles without involving teachers. At every stage our students learn to ask and listen to questions, respect opposite points of view, resolve conflict, negotiate, organize and plan team work, arrange tasks, take criticism and analyze the results of collaborative activities.
We teach our students to search for inspiration and use various creative techniques. They can create and find original solutions, implement their ideas, master learning from mistakes; they can take on board criticism and think openly. During a mathematics class our students might think of an unconventional approach to solving a difficult problem, and in social studies they might learn to see how different facts are inter-related and arrange models of them. At Letovo School everyone tries to put their ideas into practice: from creating a new student organization, rethinking and improving their school experience to taking part in a contest for entrepreneurs or decorating campus with the handmade sculptors.
We teach our students to ask the right questions, see what problems need solving, think over facts critically, reason independently, draw conclusions, formulate their own evaluations, advance arguments in support of their point of view, debate and lead discussions. Critical thinking skills play a crucial role in academics, in work and in life. Students at Letovo develop their critical thinking skills through project work and solving real-life problems. In humanities, they learn to shape their own points of view on different events or literature sources, they look for information in original sources, analyze critics’ points of view and the context of communication.
Our students learn how to communicate with video clips, audio recordings, images and infographics, as well as with standard formats: reading original printed sources, writing compositions and essays, and answering free-response questions. They also summarize information taken from different sources, shaping their ability to compare and assess their quality and credibility. Our students learn to formulate and get their message across effectively, convince, analyze and synthesize information on any topic.
